AIR, its more then you ever imagined!

Wow, the people working on Adobe AIR have some awesome things in the pipeline. They have taken (just about) the same code, and ported it to:

  • Windows
  • Mac
  • Linux
  • Web Broweser
  • Android
  • iPhone
  • iPad

For developers it means alot, but for consumers it means that the same application can run on multiple platforms and it’ll ‘behave’ the same and it’ll have the ‘same’ release date!

Disregardng the fact that the applications made with this are going to go against the user interface guidelines for each and every one of these platforms. You have to agree, that this is very exciting! I wonder how long it will be before Adobe start supporting Blackberry, Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 6 series and the upcoming Windows Mobile 7 platforms.

I am curious to see how efficient this is going to be and what the limitations are(particularly in regards to Network Traffic and FileIO). Perhaps iConnect could do with a interesting rewrite. As long as they provide adequate support (to developers) for the fundamental things such as debugging, I think they have invested their time and resources wisely. Check out the video that Christian Cantrell made demoing an reversi game running on all the platforms above with fundamentally the same Action Script code driving it.

Head to Christian’s official blog post to read more. Let me know what you think in the comments.
