Hitting two dice with one tile.

Today I am excited to announce the immediate availability of Word Dice for Windows Phone 7 and iPhone. The apps actually came online a few weeks ago but I haven’t had a chance to write-up this article. Feel free to scan the tag above(or click the links below) to start downloading and using WordDice. The primary feature set is the same on both platforms, however there are bells and whistles here and there that differentiate the two. Specifically:

Windows phone 7
  • Full metro color theme integration. Word dice takes full notice if your system color theme settings and adjusts the ascents accordingly.
  • Fun interaction with tiles. You can drag tiles around on the screen as you see fit.
  • Believe it or not, Word Dice will use the GPU to ‘animate’ tiles on the screen. What that means is that even as you type, you’ll see your tiles fly out onto the screen. A nifty touch.
  • While you think, tiles ‘float’ freely. Hard to explain! Try it and you’ll see!

I created WordDice.com a few months ago as a way to find words while playing ‘Words with Friends’ on Facebook. The latest version of the website did its job however I personally felt that it didn’t serve a practical purpose where even I’d want to use it while playing a game since it ran in a browser, so I set out to put Word Dice in my pocket.

While originally making the website, I spent a large amount of time perfecting the color scheme that i went as far as publishing a blog post about it. This was done to simply mask a deeper underlying issue where words in the search results are sorted alphabetically(as opposed to being ranked based on the point they will earn you in a game). This work around worked fine when the search results contained less than about 30 words(depending on how big your screen is), however when you have more words it simply doesn’t work especially if your search results contains a valuable tile like X or a blank tile that’s worth nothing.

To prevent this havoc from happening on a 4 inch touch screen, I added some intelligent word ranking functionality to Word Dice so that it now tells you what will earn you the most number of points with your tiles. Here is what I am talking about:

Word ranking in word dice mobile.

If you look closely, at the example above, the words are ranked with even the wild card taken into consideration! Excuse the pun, but this literally is a game changer!
